Starting in the early and mid 1990's there has been an pronounced rivalry between East and West Coast hip-hop, most notably between East Coast rapper, Notorious BIG and West Coast, 2Pac.
Here's why...
In the 1970's hip-hop emerged in the streets of New York City, however, at the end of the 1980's many west coast rappers began emerging, such as Ice-T, MC Hammer, and NWA. With the rise of West Coast hip-hop, the rivalry began. East Coast rapper, Tim Dog, released F*** Compton, that was aimed at NWA and DJ Quik, while NWA didn't respond, Snoop Dogg did.
With Snoop came Dr. Dre, who in '92 released The Chronic through Deathrow Records (Suge Knight) which hit triple platinum. The spot light had turned to West Coast Rap by 94.
The Rivalry between Suge Knight and Puff Daddy
Suge Knight openly stated, no artist wants their producer parading themselves in all the videos (a dig at Puff Daddy) and encouraged rappers to come to Deathrow Records.
Bad Boy Records vs. Deathrow Records
Bad Boy Records held rappers, Notorious B.I.G. and Craig Mack, while Deathrow held rapper TuPac.
TuPac Vs. Biggie TuPac publically declairs rivalry between Biggie and Puff Daddy, accusing them of facilitating TuPac being robbed and being shot 5 times at an NYC recording studio.
Thus the rivalry began... (to be continued...)
